General Questions
- I have further questions that are not answered in the FAQs. Who can I contact?
If you have any further questions, please contact the organization team at gfm2024@uni-mainz.de.
- Do I have to be a member of the GfM?
The GfM annual conference is a meeting of its members. If you participate actively in the conference with your own contribution, you must be a member of the GfM. According to the membership fee regulations adopted by the General Assembly in 2018, participation in the general assembly requires that you are a member and that the membership fee for the respective year has been paid. Otherwise, the association cannot support the organizing locations with the usual contribution. If you have not already done so, you can easily apply for membership of the GfM here: https://gfmedienwissenschaft.de/mitgliedschaft.
If you only wish to attend as a guest, membership is not necessary.
Please also note that there are different membership fee levels and that membership for students is also possible.
- Will the conference be hybrid?
Hybrid formats (panel in presence with online connection) require greater technical effort and are therefore unfortunately not possible.
- How can I connect to the Wi-Fi?
JGU Mainz has eduroam Wi-Fi, which you can connect to using your usual university access data. In addition, you will receive login data for the "Uni Mainz" Wi-Fi network (which will work during the conference), which you will find at the Service Desk and in the event rooms at the conference venue (Philosopicum, Jakob-Welder-Weg 18).
Questions for Presenters
- Can I still edit my submitted contribution on Conftool?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to edit your submitted contribution again. We appreciate your understanding.
- I have to cancel my contribution on short notice. Who can I contact?
If you have to cancel your contribution due to personal, technical or other problems, please e-mail us: gfm2024@uni-mainz.de.
For cancellations at very short notice shortly before or during the event, please contact the service desk of the organization team.

- Can I register for the conference as a guest?

Questions about Program Planning
- I have received a slot for my contribution which unfortunately does not work for me. Can I get another slot?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to get another slot. We appreciate your understanding.
Hotel Accommodation
- Where and how can I book a hotel for the conference?
Together with mainzplus Citymarketing, we have put together a selection of accommodation options in Mainz. You can view these under the following link: https://hotels.click-around.systems/1cb77439/c/zy6cp7
All participants cover the cost of accommodation themselves.
Site Layout
- Where can I find an overview of the various locations on the Mainz University campus?
You can find a campus overview here.
- Where can I find an overview of the event locations?
All events take place in the Philosophicum (Jakob-Welder-Weg 18). Other locations are the "Schule des Sehens" and lecture hall P1, which are located in front of the Philosophicum (approx. 1 minute walk). You can find an overview of the campus here.
Coffee breaks and food options
- Where and when can I get a coffee?
Refreshments will be available all day on the ground floor of the Philosophicum from Thursday (26.09.2024). There you can get coffee, tea, water and selected juices as well as small snacks. Please help us to avoid wasting unnecessary resources, dispose of waste yourself and return used glass bottles and cups to the catering.
You can also purchase coffee any time in our cafeterias and canteens.
- Where is a good place to gather for a meal on campus during GfM 2024?
On Wednesday evening (25.09.2024) at 18:30 there will be a small stand-up reception with wine and some finger food. For the other meals, there are various canteens and bistros on campus, of which the Cafeteria insgrüne (for small snacks) is located directly on the ground floor of the Philosophicum and the vegetarian Bambus Mensa in the Georg-Forster building right next to the Philosophicum. Please note that a payment app is required in all canteens (see How do I pay at the cafeterias from the Studierendenwerk Mainz?).

- How do I pay at the cafeterias from the Studierendenwerk Mainz?
You can obtain a guest card at the canteen terminals for a deposit of €5. You must then load the card with cash (bills) at the terminals in the canteen. You can then use your card to pay in all Johannes Gutenberg University canteens and cafeterias. You can then return the card at the >terminals at the end of the conference and you will be refunded any remaining credit and deposit.
Alternatively you can use the user-friendly payment app. Any person can simply register there (and in compliance with the GDPR) with an email address and, if you wish, set up a SEPA direct debit to load credit onto your payment app at the checkout at your request. You can access the app and further information here: https://www.studierendenwerk-mainz.de/zahlen-per-app
We recommend that you install the app and the SEPA direct debit as early as possible, as it can take a few hours to process the SEPA direct debit. Alternatively, you can top up your app with cash at terminals in front of the canteens immediately after installation.
Important: Unfortunately, remaining credit on the app cannot be refunded. We recommend topping up small amounts that you would like to use.
- Where is a good place to eat off campus during GfM 2024?
There are a number of nice restaurants and cafés in Mainz. We have put together a small selection here.
- Where will the party take place on Friday, 27.09.2024?
Our GfM party will take place on Friday from 20:30 in the Kulturcafé (Qkaff, on campus: Johann-Joachim-Becher-Weg 5).
Childcare
- I need childcare. Who can help me?
If you need help finding childcare in Mainz, please contact the organization team at gfm2024@uni-mainz.de.
Accessibility
- How accessible is the event?
As organizers, we strive to ensure accessible and equal opportunities for all our guests to participate in the conference. We have compiled information for wheelchair users below. If you have any further questions or additional accessibility requirements, please contact us.
The Philosophicum has several ground-level entrances. However, only the western side entrance (near the Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg stop) and the entrance between Philo II (neighboring building) and the front wing of the Philosophicum have a ramp and electric door openers. The Philosophicum also has several elevators distributed throughout the building as well as barrier-free restrooms on the ground and first level, where the conference events also take place. Further information on the entrances, elevators and restrooms of the Philosophicum can be found at https://www.barrierefrei.uni-mainz.de/philosophicum/.
Please note that there is only limited space for wheelchairs in some of the permanently seated event rooms in the Philosophicum (P10, P13, P102, P104). Lecture room P1 (where the general meeting takes place, among other things), which also has fixed seating, is located in a small building to the right of the Philosophicum. The separate entrances to P1 are at ground level, but the doors cannot be opened electronically and are somewhat stiff. There is space for about 4 wheelchair users in P1 itself. You can find more information about P1 at https://www.barrierefrei.uni-mainz.de/hoersaele-des-philosophicums/.
